for my reception, we are on a budget, i was thinking of catering sandwiches from corner bakery. it will be around 3:30 pm... the sandwiches i was thinking putting a couple of them in little baskets at each table, a long with potato salad, ceaser salad, and small trays of cheese and fruits... i was wondering if that would be okay? or people would think it is tacky? Is serving sandwiches okay for a wedding? it is picnic theme...?
If this is what you can afford, so be it. A reception does not have to be a big 'do' at the Walorf Astoria. Do what you can.Is serving sandwiches okay for a wedding? it is picnic theme...?
I think it is a great idea! I would ask the deli/bakery though if they could place the bread, meat, and other items on separate trays. Set up a buffet with the items and have the guest make their own. Make sure you have the regular sandwich toppings on hand: mayo, mustard, pickles, etc. Maybe the things to make a few different types of sandwiches: ham, turkey, tuna, pb%26amp;j (place the pb %26amp; j in different squirt bottles for an easy, mess free way), and chicken salad. Try adding some green olives, cole slaw, and devil eggs for more budget friendly alternatives.
If you are worried about the typical "white-bread sandwich" being too casual, ask the bakery to prepare the sandwiches with croissants. The picnic basket is a great idea. If it is a really casual wedding maybe you could set picnic blankets up instead of tables... I like this idea especially if children will be at the wedding. The baskets can be set up at the end of the line with each families name on one to fill to take to their table or blanket (doubles as a favor so that is a +). Also, you could get some vegetable trays and don't forget the watermelon! This is idea you could really play up and have it be a fun EXPERIENCE (not just a wedding) for all of your guest and it would be so inexpensive to do so! Good luck!
I think its lovely, goes awesome with your picnic theme... i agree with a buffet style and allow people to grab there own personally i don't like mayo or mustard, i just like a dry sand witch with bread cheese meat, =] some people may not like ham or Turkey, this way you can keep everything cooled off so it wont go bad over the afternoon, also you could do the cheese trays and all that, and keep in mind that it is at 3;30 and people will need to go home for dinner, unless you had an after party where people BYOB and have a mini get together, idk where you live but maybe have a camping trip later that night to go with the picnic theme. My husband and i got married back in march we just went to the court house and was planning on having a reception at the lake and cook out invite all our family and friends there would be beer ETC ect there so if anyone wanted to get shitty and camp out with us they wouldn't have to chance driving drunk. you know? don't let any one tell you its tacky, if they tell you its tacky tell them they can pay for catering! good luck marrage is an amazing thing !Is serving sandwiches okay for a wedding? it is picnic theme...?
As long as you provide food and drinks (with or without alcohol) for your guests, you are not tacky.
A picnic themed reception with sandwiches and salads sounds like a festive and inexpensive (without being cheap) way to celebrate your wedding. It is a welcome change from the usual catering hall meal.
My suggestion is to have the bakery put the condiments (mayo, mustard, etc) on the side. Guests can add them if they like. I do think having pre-made sandwiches is better than cold cut trays. To me, sandwiches always taste better if someone else makes them.
I hope you are not tacking a picnic onto a formal ceremony.... the food idea is great for an afternoon wedding but it all needs to fit together...casual meal, casual ceremony.
Don't do build your own cupcakes --- have them decorated and ready to eat.. that is too children's birthday party. Is serving sandwiches okay for a wedding? it is picnic theme...?
Sandwiches are fine... Placing them in baskets on the individual tables not so much, they will dry out and become warm as will the potato salad etc.... Serve them buffet style on ice instead to keep everything cold and avoid the illness which can occur when things like potato salad, mayo etc. gets warm...
Sandwiches at a wedding = not tacky... Making your guests sick = very tacky...
That's a cute idea. I think guests will love it and remember its originality. There's no reason to spend an insane amount on a wedding, and since it's an earlier reception time I doubt people would expect a big dinner. Good luck planning!
What a great idea! it's a shame that so many people go in debt to get married. If anyone has the gall to tell you it was "chessy"- you'll no not to send them a Christmas card =) Don't worry what everyone else thinks. This is your wedding. Best wishes
Thats totally fine :) I plan on having little sandwiches at my wedding also with some meat/ fruit trays.. I'm only having about 50 people, but just double that amount or so...
I think that is a wonderful idea . . . and perfect for your picnic theme. I'm picturing this with gingham tablecloths.
That's totally fine, if the reception starts at 3:30. Just don't expect people to stay too late, since they'll probably want to go for dinner.
LOVELY idea... my brother and his now-wife just served Italian Beef sandwiches at their wedding, and it was great. Sounds like just the right amount of food for 3:30...
Yes, it would be just fine.
