How do animal breeders live with themselves?

http://monterey.craigslist.org/pet/13410鈥?/a>

So i was browsing craigslist and i came upon the article above. Its pretty depressing. I know they're just animals but come on. Were the higher beings on this planet shouldn't we be stopping things like this from happeneing. We kinda encourage it. I'm not saying any one is bad or anything. But theres gotta be some gray ground where we can minimalize this. Like mabye we can make animal credits so that every person can own up to a certain ammount of dogs, unless they are trained professionals like ceaser mylan. We can also make them read paperwork saying what a animal requires and then make them sign something saying they fully understand it. Then if they for any reason canot care for that animal have to pay some kind of fee. because its so easy to get a cute little puppy then 10 months down the line your going to college, or moving, or die. Then that living breathing dependent of yours has to move on and find a new home. Or worse go through that holocaust like experience described in the article above. Why cant we some how pay breeders not to do it. Or make a program to transition breeders from breeders to something else. mabye we can make a program that enables self employed breeders to get governement aid for a period of time untill they can get off it and get a real job.

I know im rambling but **** is this insane or what. I adopted my dog. not because i couldn't afford a bred dog but because i knew i was saving her life. Even if someone would've adopter her, hopefully they got one of the other. How do animal breeders live with themselves?
I breed both chinchillas and gerbils. What we do is we interview each person interested in one of our animals to make sure that they know how to care for them properly. Also, we don't breed for money. We breed because we like people being able to go and purchase a healthy animal for them to love. We also make an agreement that if anything happens so that they can't take care of them they return them to us. I don't know if that helps at all.How do animal breeders live with themselves?
people on craigslist are not always truthful. sometimes they give a story so people will feel sorry for the animal and come and take it from you. also, if you don't have a good story, people will delete your ad for no good reason. I tried to sell some cute cocker spaniel puppies through that web page (my mother bought a 3 year old female not knowing she was pregnant through craigslist) and people kept deleting the ad. never mind rearing puppies properly costs money, shots cost money, food costs money, plus you want to charge a little so they wind up in a good, caring home. I'm rambling too, but I hope this helps with your concerns.
there are some REPUTABLE breeders who breed solely for the betterment of the breed!

Pet stores and buyers are the real problem as you see here

if people didnt support the industry of puppy mills.. they wouldnt exist! How do animal breeders live with themselves?
I agree : ( Breeders just do not give a crap. It is really sad. I've volunteered at the animal shelter and it's sooo depressing. When I eventually go looking to adopt a dog, I'm looking for a big black dog! Maybe someone should start a special dog rescue for big black dogs. It's ridiculous the excuses people have for giving up their pets. But how can that kind of thing be changed? No matter what, you know there's going to be some dumbass out there who wants the cute little puppy in the petstore and later realizes how much work they are. It's too bad there isn't some kind of test for people who want to get a pet. If you're not a true animal lover, maybe a pet isn't for you. I know how much of a commitment pets are! One of my cockatiels needs 2 meds twice a day and massaging of his crop 2-3 times a day because of some kind of bacterial infection. How many regular people prolly wouldn't even have brought him into the vet, you know? What is wrong with people anyway? It's so sad. If we're so high and mighty and advanced, why can't we change the way things are? The average person does not give a crap! Now I'm babbling haha...
Not every breeder is a backyard one that doesn't give a crap. I'm looking at getting a breeder ferret from someone who will make me SIGN a contract saying that if I cannot take care of it that it goes STRAIGHT back to her. If I don't follow the contract I could be sued and the ferret will be given back to her if they find it.

Some do care about where their pets go. I would love to get a breeder ferret because I will probably have 2 more years with it than an average mill ferret. Some breeders actually give out quality animals to true pet owners.

BUT, the ones that are cruel, sick, and breed ALL these poor animals several times every year deserve to be fined and jailed- put them in a jail cell the size of the crate they locked their breeder dogs in. It's sad that there are people out there who think it's okay.

Granted- all my pets are from the pet store other than my cat who was a stray, but if there were more dogs available in my area that fit my lifestyle and the ferret shelter wasn't 5 hours away you'd bet they'd all be rescues. How do animal breeders live with themselves?
To the poster and animal lover, just to let you know it isn't the responsible, reputable breeders causing all of these problems. It is the so called breeders that don't give a dam and BYBers, and puppy mills/farms that have ruined it for all.

My husband and myself have been Standard Show Poodle Breeders for over 30 years now and have never had a puppy taken to a shelter, rescue or re homes. We did have one many years ago returned to us because of a child being allergic to it.

Being in this business we have seen puppies put to sleep and adult dogs also. The people breeding Maltese and Chihuahua's together should be the ones to go see that.

When we breed our dogs they have full through health checks and regular vet visits during the pregnancy. And we also have a list of potential buyers before we breed. And when we sell a puppy it is 100% registrable with AKC. and no other kennel club. The people buying come to us we show both parents together and give a box of paperwork, food, collar, and leash, a puppy blanket and new toys for puppy. We also provide a puppy carrier to be transported home in..

But these people are paying for quality dogs no something that will die before they get it home. But then of course when you are paying between $2,500.00 and $3,000.00 for a dog you expect something for your money.

We have show dogs all over the world,

So start b itching at the BYBers, the puppy mills/farms and all of those breeders that breed their dogs because they have nice butts.
