We are getting him next Sat. He currently eats Purina but my fet says thats a crap food! he will get no more than 10 lbs! MY choices are Royal Canine, Canidae, Bill Jac or Iams.
A web site I saw says mix Royal canine and Bill Jac dry food and leave it out all the time
Then get a can of Eukanuba and a can of little ceaser pyppy and give canned food at least 4 x 1-2 tablespoons a day? I think thats alot of food! he is only 7 weeks please help me!!! And keep Nutrical at all times! What is a good dog food to feed a cockapoo?
canidae, by far. all the rest you listed is junk.
reason is that dogs cant digest corn, and its unhealthy for them. all of the dog food you can get at a grocery store all have corn in the ingredient (some the main one! when it should be meat!) and by-fillers (like chicken beaks, legs, etc.)
there also shouldn't be any brewers rice, artificial colorings, sugar, etc.
but just because the first ingredient is meat doesn't mean the dog food is healthy. companies (such as iams) are trying to trick you by saying "look, chicken is the first ingredient! so it MUST be healthy!" but really, if it is just CHICKEN, then that has a lot of water in it, so the actual meat gets knocked down to like the 4th or 5th main ingredient. chicken MEAL however, would be the number one ingredient if listed so. and also, by putting a meat ingredient as the first one, they're just going to think you're not going to look any farther and see that they have other disgusting junk in the food.
if you need help choosing, you can go to www.dogfoodanalysis.com
4 or above.
and that website also goes in more depth about dog food ingredients.
oh yeah, and canned is ok right now since he's only 7 weeks (well, 8 when you get him), but don't give JUST canned to the dog, it's bad for the dog's teeth. but if your dog is having a hard time biting the dry kibble, usually adding a little bit of canned dog food helps him able to eat the kibble more, but avoid it if you can. exact same thing happened with my dog.
%26amp; no sudden changes in diet.
hope this helps. What is a good dog food to feed a cockapoo?
I would think twice about the Eukanuba and ceaser puppy food. Those are pretty low quality foods to be giving your dog. I would honestly do Canidae with him 100%. If you want to do better for him, give him Innova.
Tips for Choosing a Dog Food Brand
Have you ever wondered whether the food you’re giving your dog is actually healthy for him? Follow these simple steps to “grade” your dogs food and see its true quality.
Start with a grade of 100
1. For every listing of "by-product", subtract 10 points.
2. For every non-specific animal source (meat, poultry, meal, or fat) reference, subtract 10 points.
3. If the food contains BHA, BHT, or ethoxyquin, subtract 10 points.
4. For every grain mill run or non-specific grain source, subtract 5 points.
5. If the same grain ingredient is used 2 or more times in the first five ingredients (i.e. ground brown rice, brewers rice, rice flour are all the same grain), subtract 5 points.
6. If the protein sources are not meat meal and there are less than 2 meats in the top 3 ingredients, subtract 3 points.
7. If it contains any artificial colorants, subtract 3 points.
8. If it contains ground corn or whole grain corn, subtract 3 points.
9. If corn is listed in the top 5 ingredients, subtract 2 more points.
10. If the food contains any animal fat other than fish oil, subtract 2 points.
11. If lamb is the only animal protein source (unless your dog is allergic to other protein sources) subtract 2 points.
12. If it contains soy or soybeans, subtract 2 points.
13. If it contains wheat (unless you know that your dog is not allergic to wheat), subtract 2 points.
14. If it contains beef (unless you know that you dog is not allergic to beef), subtract 1 point.
15. If it contains salt, subtract 1 point.
Extra Credit:
1. If any of the meat sources are organic, add 5 points.
2. If the food is endorsed by any major breed group or nutritionist, add 5 points.
3. If the food is baked not extruded, add 5 points.
4. If the food contains probiotics, add 3 points.
5. If the food contains fruit, add 3 points.
6. If the food contains vegetables (NOT corn or other grains), add 3 points.
7. If the animal sources are hormone-free and antibiotic-free, add 2 points.
8. If the food contains barley, add 2 points.
9. If the food contains flax seed oil (not just the seeds), add 2 points.
10. If the food contains oats or oatmeal, add 1 point.
11. If the food contains sunflower oil, add 1 point.
12. For every different specific animal protein source (other than the first one; count chicken and chicken meal as only one protein source), add 1 point.
13. If it contains glucosamine and chondroitin, add 1 point.
14. If the vegetables have been tested for pesticides and are pesticide-free, add 1 point.

It does not matter what the breed of dog is good quality food is good quality food and poor quality food is poor quality food. You really need to educate yourself on how to read a label and what the terms mean.
How to read a pet food label.

What “by products” include.

Also did you know that much of the “meat” used in pet food manufacturing is treat with toxic chemicals?

BTW what are you doing with a 7 week old puppy. At that age he is too young to be away from his littermates and mother.
I absolutely go with Canidae, too. And no free-feeding. About 4 meals a day right now, 3 a day in a few weeks, and then 2 for the rest of his life. The Whole Dog Journal has an article about feed: http://www.whole-dog-journal.com/sample/…
On a different note: I am sad to hear that the breeder wants to get rid of the puppy before it is healthy for it to leave its mom and siblings. I hope you are prepared to deal with the problems you may encounter because of this. I shouldn't be surprised, though, since he/she feeds Purina! Does she/he ask a lot of money for these "designer breed" mutts, too? You may need to check for worms first thing, too. And don't expect it to be well socialized, either. Sorry to rain on your parade, but you may be in for some nasty surprises. This sounds like a "backyard breeder".What is a good dog food to feed a cockapoo?
These little dogs get fat quick. NO CANNED if you can help it!! He'll pick out the canned, or not eat his dry because he'll want canned, and Canned is expensive, and bad for their teeth!
Go out, get a bag of Canidae, and feed teh recommended amount. Mixing foods is just a substitute for getting a better food in the 1st place.
Out of your list, Canidae is the best choice, hands down!
Royal Canin, Bil-Jac, Iams, Eukanuba, and Cesar are all low-quality foods. Full of undesirable ingredients like corn, fillers, by-products, etc.
But Canidae is an excellent food. High meat content, no fillers, no byproducts, overall an excellent ingredient list.
---
Read the ingredients before you buy. Go with a high-quality dog food.
Here is what I look for when I am looking at dog food ingredients:
1) When I chose a dog food, I chose one high meat content. I want to see preferably at least 2-3 out of the top 5 ingredients be meat or meat meal (first ingredient must be!). Meal is simply the meat with the moisture removed.
2) I want to see higher quality grains, such as barley, brown rice, and oatmeal, instead of seeing wheat and corn. Or an alternative starch/carbohydrate such as potatoes or sweet potatoes.
3) I don't want to see any byproducts.
4) I don't want to see a lot of fillers.
5) I don't want to see preservatives that are believed to be carcinogens (BHA, BHT, ethoxyquin).
6) I don't want to see artificial colorings such as the Red, Blue, and Yellow dyes.
7) I don't want to see added sugars (sugar, corn syrup).
8) I don't want to see mystery meats (meats identified only as "meat" or "poultry".)
.
Out of the foods you have given Canidae is the best! If the dog can chew alright then DON'T feed canned food... There is no need for canned food.
well...... i feed my (6) miniature dachshunds Purina 1 and they are very healthy. my vet said i SHOULD feed them Purina 1 to keep there bones strong and to keep them heart healthy.
I also had a German Shepard, the vet said i SHOULD feed her Purina 1 to and she lived to be 14(98 in dog years)
%26lt;%26gt;%26lt;%26gt;***%26lt;%26gt;%26lt;%26gt; NEVER EVER, NEVER EVER GIVE A DOG CANNED DOG FOOD IT WILL GIVE THEM THE SQUIRTS, TRUST ME ON THIS. WITH DRY DOG FOOD PORTION IT OUT. AND WHEN YOU GIVE IT ITS FOOD PUT A LITTLE WATER IN IT AND LET IT SOAK just a little bit about 1min. Ok. just feed in morning and at night not at lunch. k i hope i helped. :-)
I think that food is really rich in vitamins and if you continue to follow those instructions, then you will have to start dealing with a pear shaped pup!
Canadae and Merrick. Dry food all the way because it's better for their teeth. Sorry to say this but the rest of the foods are just really bad! They contain too many fillers, corn, soy and by- products! I feed my dogs a homemade mixture with some Canadae and some Merrick kibble thrown in. My home made mixture contains...
2 x-tra large liver cookie bones crushed up
1 raw egg
2 tablespoons of peanut butter
2-8 sardines (as much as i really want for a shiny coat, Omega 3 and fish oils)
1/2 cup of Merrick/Canadae kibble
Some cooked broccoli
A pinch of garlic ( tasty smell)
Some cheese
Fresh Chicken
1 cup of rice
And I add a bit of different meats every now and then. I have 12 dogs and puppies so i got to divide the meals and sometimes add a bit more ingredients if i don't add enough!! They love it and it's yummy so you could try it. All ingredients yummy and healthy. You should try it if you don't mind the hassle of getting the ingredients together the first time you make it. But it's so worth it my dogs love it! It's like a little gourmet meal for your dog!
Your vet was right, Purina is nothing but chicken flavored crap. Royal Canine and Canidae are really good dog foods, and I really recommend them to you.
Don't do Iams. http://www.iamskills.com/
When I look for dog foods, I look for meat as the first listed ingrediant, no artificial flavorings, and no sweeteners like corn syrup or sugar.
What I would recommend for you is to feed him one tablespoon of wet food mixed with one cup of dry food twice every day, once in the morning and once at night.
Don't believe that website. That is a lot of food, and your puppy would get really fat.
So my suggestion, feed him Royal Canine or Canidae dog food.
My dog likes purina puppy chow I used to feed her Iams but she didn't like it as much and it was more expensive.
The food manufacture are in the business of selling food. Of course they are going to tell you feed the puppy more than they need.
I personally use wellness dog food. It is made from all human grade ingredients. Iams is one of the foods that has someone make it for them. In my opinion if you can buy it at walmart it is no good. Iams is sold in Walmart.
We have used Canidae, it is good also. There are no by products it that also.
When you get the cockapoo you need to gradually change him or her over. Mix a small amount of the food you plan on switching to and gradually increase it slowly over the first few weeks. Take care and good luck with the puppie
I personally like Royal Canin the best out of your choices.
I personally prefer IAMS as it is really the only quality food I can find at walmart. Other walmarts may carry different quality foods, but the one in my area doesn't. I like it because the number one ingredient is a meat product. I just adopted a dog and we will be feeding him IAMS with first ingredient chicken. I can buy it at walmart so it has an affordable price, but I don't have to sacrifice the health of my dog.
Small dogs seem to like Caesars and Kibbles n Bits.
I have a cockapoo.
We feed him Pedigree, or Costco dog food (kirkland).
