Hello! :) I'm an 18 year old girl and I need money! I need to pay for my schooling, and for the rent, and I need a little bit of advice. I have a job at a pizza store (Little Ceasers) but they haven't opened yet. They have only given me one shift as well, all though I can now switch to part time because I do not attend school at the moment. (next september I will) Should I look for a second job? Their is a fitness store that is hiring, would it be wise to apply? I would prefer that job, actually, but I feel as though I have a job, I should stick with it.What should I do about my job situation?
At the level of work that you are applying for (given your age and experience, etc.) its really considered entry level work force. No one at any job should ever fault you for trying to make ends meet. If they can not give you more hours, than as an employer, they should expect you to seek additional employment. Currently you are "under employed", but not unemployed. Regardless, under employed doesnt pay bills any better than unemployed, does it.
The way to go about this is to go to your little ceasar's supervisor and say, "thank you for hiring me. I'm really looking forward to being a Little Ceasar's employee. Because I value my relationship with Little Ceasar's I want to be honest with you and let you know that I must seek additional work, because it appears that you are unable to offer me more than one shift right now. One shift will not support my educational goals (good employers should appreciate educational goals). If at any time you have more hours for me or if you have other concerns, please let me know. My employment is a priority for me."
That should go over very well, and will gain you some points. Then go get an additional job.
Understand, though, that there are lots of STUPID small time middle managers. They either are getting not noticed, or some regional manager hasn't come around to fire them yet. If you get a lot of grief about saying all of the above good stuff, then be ready to walk away. After all, its just a pizza job, and YOUR REAL priority is school. You gotta do what it takes to live and pay for school right now. I'd like to know what happens. What should I do about my job situation?
Look if you renege on your job with little Caesar so what. They have a huge market with plenty of replacement employees. Plus the work is terrible. Trust me. Working fast food of any kind is a crappy job. Besides working at a fitness joint will probably not only pay better but keep you in shape too. Its also something you'd rather do. And believe me it is far easier to stick to a job that you want to do rather than some job you feel obligated to.
As far as paying for school I have no idea how financial aid works in Canada but if its anything like it is in the US apply for grants and scholarships as much as possible. It will likely require a lot of paper work but the result is worth it. Only get loans as a last resort. Try to get as much as you can through grants and scholarships first.
Time management is critical. See when I first started college back in fall of 2003 I worked full time I schooled full time and I partied full time. So I was pushing an 80 hour week between those three. Needless to say it didn't work out for long. Long story short, try as best as possible to effectively manage your time. If you don't you will end up overwhelmed and you'll probably end up failing school or losing your job (regardless of which job you stick to) or both.
In the mean time don't quit your job at the pizza place until you are sure you have the job at the fitness center. Right now your job at the pizza place is a sure deal. You don't know about the other place.
