How do you put a dog on a diet?

I have a fat chihuahua (Chico), He got fat over the past 2 years since he was fixed. I feed him 2 pouches of the Ceaser's wet dog food everyday- that is all he likes. I don't know how much dog food will be a healthy serving for a dog his size. He is about 6 years old. He also has fluffy hair, the vet said one of his ancestors mixed with another breed like pinkoneese (spell?) or something. Despite the weight, this little dog stays outside all day and only comes in to eat, sleep, and get lovins. He is very active, but he's a ham.How do you put a dog on a diet?
The best way to put a dog on a diet is gradually. You have to slowly decrease his portions twice a day (I assume you are feeding him twice a day), until you begin seeing some results. You should also try switching his food to special "dog diet" food. The way you do this is by mixing a half portion of the new food with a half portion of the old food and gradually decrease the amount of the old food. This process should take about a week. I feed my 8 pound dog a quarter of a cup of food twice a day (dry food, though), and his weight is very healthy. Also, when you look for new food, make sure it's not full of preservatives and that the first ingredient is a meat or meat meal, like duck meal, etc.How do you put a dog on a diet?
The best way is for you to start eating his food. When he watches you do it, he would have no other option but to diet.
it says the serving size on the pouch, determined by how much he weighs. that's really crappy food by the way...no wonder.

you need to WALK him. playing outside all day is not enough. he needs a good 30-min walk every day.How do you put a dog on a diet?
My lab has the same problem. I don't think you can humanely cut the diet of a dog, however, you can exercise the dog. Labs for example are very active. When I moved out of the house, she had no one left to play with or go on long walks with, so she pigged out. Now she's fat fat fat.

But I still love her :)
He sounds adorable!!! But being overweight can cause serious health issues and shorten his lifespan. Try cutting back on the portions and taking him for walks. Walking him at least every other day will help him lose weight and be fun for both of you.How do you put a dog on a diet?
I used Science diet dog food for my Black lab. It was more expensive but worth it for my best friend.
teach him to jump rope and run a tread mill.
Because she is getting older her weight will start piling on. Give her dry food. Maybe 1 cup a day. She will loose weight!!!!!!
Argh.

First, Chis are not outside dogs. He may be fat because you have dumped him outside for the majority of the day. Shame on you for forcing a toy dog to live outside.

Secondly, that is a crappy crappy food. Regardless, the serving size should be written right on the tin. From what I found on the Internet, it's 4 tins per 10lbs. If that's too much, it may be time to switch to a high quality lite food (like Innova Evo RF).

Third, the dog needs more specific exercise. He needs to be walked. He needs to play fetch. He needs to play with you and his toys. We are talking minimum 30 minutes for 'cardio' like walking and additional playing time. This is SEPARATE from the time that you've dumped him outside.

Please, allow him to live inside. It's not fair to force a toy dog to live outside. In fact, no Chi rescue group or good Chi breeder would let a family like this have a dog - so that should say something. . .
Dogs easily get over weight on moist food. Switch him to a dry food and follow the recommendation listed on the packaging. Please don't say my dog will not eat anything else. Dogs in general do not know how to starve themselves in order to get something good to eat. If they are really hungry they will eat something no matter wat it is. Be strict - don't feel sorry for the dog - give your dog specific time frame that he can eat - lets say if you feed him at 9pm then he can only eat at 9pm no other time. Adult dogs should be eating only one meal a day, and if you're feeding him 2 pouches, most likely it's too much. Furthermore, because he is an outside dog doesn't mean it's exercise. Walk your dog. Ample exercise is good for your dog - not just 10 minutes - a good long 30 minute walk a day to tire him out. Everyone in the family has to work together. Make sure he doesn't get any table scraps from anyone. My Sheltie was 28 pounds, she now weighs 18 pounds through a strict diet and plenty of exercise. It's up to the owners on whether they really want their dogs to lose weight - just remember if he's hungry enough, he'll eat despite how much he doesn't like the dog food.
Here is a blog that shows the journey of a woman that hadto put her dog on a diet and yes you should ensure your dog is not obese - just like humans, its not healthy. I work for Dog Fancy and this is a contributor that shared her experience and methods for safe weight loss. Diet and excercise - just like humans.

that stuff is garbage - its all by-products! what do you give him for treats? that puts weight on him too. He is fat because he eats too much.

He should be on premium quality dry food %26amp; you use the guidlines on the bag according to what he should weigh. not what he weighs now

Use baby carrots %26amp; apple slices for treats %26amp; take him for walks.

He should not be outside unsupervised - ever.
Try switching to a higher quality dry food, especially one that is a weight management diet and cut portions. Replace doggie treats with carrots and if they act like they are starving you can add some canned green beans to their diet.

Chihauhau's can be very picky about their diet so I recommend switching over gradually.

Don't forget that there are health issues that can be causing his weight gain such as Cushings and hypothyroidism. Check with your vet for what they recommend. The test for hypothyroidism is a simple blood test, while the test for cushings is 2 blood draws and an injection.
the only food I give my min pin is nutro. I have had such a good experience with it. They have food for your case helping control diet, but you shouldn't be feeding him that kind of food it's no good at all. Even if he has a ten acre back yard and plays all day he still needs to be walked 30 min to an hr every day, Just like the lady above me said. If you really want to help your dog and your not just asking to feel better then do these things he'll drop weight before your eyes.
I also have a dog but not a chihuahua its a rottweiler you need to

exercise your dog and if he's fat maybe you need to

ask a vet if is just healthy or overweight. My dog is in a diet but

his to big compared to a chihuahua so my advice give him

1 and a half pouch of Ceaser's wet dog food everyday.
OMG Cesar is one of the worst food to have him on. First of all, its wet food, and will rot his teeth. Next, Cesar was one of the foods recalled. Lastly, Cesar is made of nothing more than byproducts = no nutritional value.

Try putting him on a high protein, low carb diet, like Innova EVO. They are very small bites, and should definately help Chico lose weight, but he will look and act better as well.
DUH???

Are you FING *KIDDING*????

FEED LESS!

How can anything be more SIMPLE!!!

ANY dry ADULT feed is FINE!

***LESS**** than a HALF cup PER DAY!!!

ONE meal a day! NOTHING else!

*IT* can't buy junk-food OR open the frig!!
