westie
West Highland White Terriers (Westies). I love my Westie dogs. Having said that be sure to research the Terrier breed. My dogs are high energy and need lots of exercise.
Why does this question get asked almost everyday?
Anyway...getting a dog just because you saw it on a commercial isnt the best way to go about it. Ask the hundreds of Jack russells that are now in shelters because their owners wanted a Wishbone or Edie and didnt realize that terriers are...well...terriers. Westies fit in to the category too, but I would argue are more demanding than Jack Russells because they require quite diligent (and expensive) grooming.
Terriers are intelligent, strong-willed, energetic, easily bored, easily excited, demanding little dogs. That isnt to say that they are bad dogs (in my opinion there is no such thing) but your average terrier requires a lot of work, patience and I would argue experience in dealing with.
An untrained terrier will bark at everything it sees, dig, escape, destroy anything it can fit in to its mouth, and possibly nip or bite people or other animals.
A properly trained terrier is loving, semi-calm, obedient, playful and a true delight. BUT it takes a full year of training and staying on top of the dog's every move to get him this way. You have to be more stubborn than the dog, but also very patient.
Please do research before you get a dog of any breed and I beg of you to check any local shelters or www.petfinder.com before getting a pure bred dog....and if you do get a purebreed, do research in to proper breeders so that you dont get a dog from a puppy mill or poor breeder.
